The answer is in the question, look for OSS notes, e.g. 185530 - Performance: Customer developments in SD (look for the provided keywords to adapt your search, note alos that SD has also some "index/matchode" tables as VAKPA and VAPMA)
And of course, for anything else there is HANA...
